If you’re looking for a way to make sure you make the most of your second quarter Chase Freedom bonus categories then Chase may have just helped you out.

The Chase Freedom 2Q bonus categories include grocery store spending, PayPal spending and, for the second quarter running Chase Pay spending. The Chase Pay option is probably the weakest of the three options on offer as it’s still not accepted in all that many places.

Now, however, Chase has announced that 10,000 US Shell gas stations are accepting Chase Pay with immediate effect.

Here’s how it works according to Chase:

When using the Shell app or Chase Pay app to fill up, customers simply pull up to the pump, enter their pump number, and receive a 3-digit code to enter into the dispenser to refuel. Customers using mobile payment through the Shell app or the Chase Pay app at participating Shell branded stations in the U.S. can earn both Chase’s Ultimate Rewards® with eligible Chase credit cards and savings with the Fuel Rewards® program.

Chase Pay is now also accepted at the Shell convenience stores attached to the gas stations…so there may be a gift card play that can be made there (I haven’t been to a Shell gas station for a while so I can’t remember what they sell!)

I haven’t had a chance to try the Chase Pay app out at Shell yet so I’m not entirely clear on where one enters the pump number (is it directly into the Chase Pay app? If so is there a “Shell” button in the app to let the app know what you’re doing?) but I’ll update this post when I try it out as soon as the 2Q bonus categories are live.
