As I was trying to figure out how to make the most of the current good Qatar Airways deals between Europe and Dubai I accidentally stumbled upon a truly amazing Business Class fare from Lufthansa. As things stand the German airline is offering roundtrip Business Class travel between Milan and Dubai from just $782/£588/€687.

How To Find The Fare

As always, I was using the ITA Matrix search when I found the fare and these are the parameters that should get you the best results:

Clearly you should change the dates and length of stay to suit your needs but I strongly suggest you set the search to show results with a maximum of one stop…otherwise you’ll get a lot of convoluted routings which really aren’t going to be of much use to you.

Fare Availability

The fare rules mean that you have to purchase 14 days before departure so, at the time of writing, the great fare is available from 18 July….

….an the availability is excellent for most of the rest of 2016…..

August

September

October

November

But, as the fare ends on the 4th of December, the final month of 2016 has very limited availability:

The Fare Rules

The headline rules are as follows:

  • Outbound travel allowed through 4 December
  • Tickets must be issued by 31 July 2016
  • Stopovers not permitted
  • Minimum stay is 6 days or the first Sunday after departure
  • Maximum stay is 3 months

What in essence the minimum stay requirements mean is thatyou can stay as little as 2 nights…..

….or just about any other number of nights you like:

Your choice of trip length is all down to the day you choose to fly out.

The Routing, Flights & Fare

The path of least resistance (i.e the one that involves the shortest travel time) is one that routes via Frankfurt:

And, in case you were wondering how easy these fares are to book, here’s an example booking on Lufthansa’s website:

And here’s another example on Kayak:

Lufthansa 747-400 Business Class

The main long-haul flight is operated by Lufthansa’s ageing 747-400 aircraft….but they’ve been receiving a lot of TLC since late 2014 and a lot of them (all of them?) have been refurbished with a new Business Class cabin.

Lufthansa flys its 747-400s in two different configurations and the aircraft on the Frankfurt – Dubai route come with 67 Business Class seats as evidenced by ExpertFlyer (on the left) and as shown in more detail by SeatGuru (in the middle and on the right):

It should be noted that there are issues with the Lufthansa 747-400 Business Class cabin but they can be, mostly, avoided.

Firstly you’ll notice that there are 3 seats in the centre section of the lower deck….that’s very 1995 and to be avoided unless you’re traveling in a 3 and really, really want to sit together.

Secondly, the E & G seats are terribly designed in so much that the seats are angled towards one another and, as Runway Girl Network put it, “meet at the footwell and are separated only by a relatively flimsy centimetre-thick divider“. That’s never good and would be especially bad if you didn’t know the person in the next seat.

If I was booking this fare I’d be heading for the upper deck of the 747 or, at a push, sitting in rows 2 or 3 on the lower deck.

Two Other Things To Note

1 – Some of the flight times can leave you with a rather long layover in Frankfurt:

long-layover

There are a lot of flights to choose from with these fares so you shouldn’t be left in a situation where you have an unnecessarily long layover….just don’t book a trip without checking exactly what your journey time will be.

2 – These fares only appear to be available for early departures from Milan so, if you’re not already in Milan, you’ll almost certainly have to factor in an overnight stay if you want to make the most of this fare.

Bottom Line

This is a truly fantastic fare from Lufthansa and, although not too tempting in the searing summer heat, it looks amazing value for anyone looking for a warm weather break later in the year.

Make sure you factor in the cost of any overnight accommodations you may need in Milan and any positioning flights you’re going to have to take (if you’re not based in northern Italy) before you decide if this is a good deal for you….but, to be frank, Business Class fares between Europe and Dubai don’t get much better than this.
