Back in June I wrote a brief article about the fun Japanese airline ANA has been having with its Disney partnership – specifically with all the promotional material surrounding the new Star Wars movie.
Back then ANA had promised us a 787 Dreamliner painted to resemble the droid R2-D2 and they supplied an artist’s impression of what the plane would look like:
That was all the information we had.
Well, the plane has been rolled out, we have pictures and we finally have some route information:

It’s remarkably similar to the “artist’s impressions”.
Not only is the outside of the plane dressed in Star Wars livery but the interior is said to feature “themed in-flight decorations” (headrest covers, paper napkins, cups) and all 6 of the existing Star Wars movies will be playing on the in-flight entertainment system.
The Dreamliner will enter service on 18 October on ANA’s Tokyo-Vancouver route (NH116) before moving on to other international routes. The other routes will include:
USA – Seattle and San Jose
Europe – Brussels, Munich and Paris
Australia – Sydney
China – Beijing
Indonesia – Jakarta
ANA is decorating two further planes with Star Wars livery – the first, a 767-300, will be decorated as one of the new characters from the soon-to-be-released movie (hopefully this one isn’t as annoying as Jar Jar Binks!) while the second will be a 777-300ER and will follow in the footsteps of the Dreamliner with an R2-D2 livery.
[…] In the absence of any concrete information we’re left to speculate, and the most logical conclusion I can come up with is that it’s a promotional flight to show off their Star Wars liveried aircraft. […]
[…] the preliminary schedule for its R2-D2 Dreamliner: I wrote a post about this aircraft back in the middle of September and, at the time, we didn’t know what routes ANA planned to fly and when they would commence […]
