I’ve mentioned Iberia Plus before as I believe it’s a loyalty program of which everyone who collects Avios should be a member. I’ll mention a few benefits of Iberia Plus a bit later as this post is primarily to let you know that you can currently buy Avios from Iberia Plus and get a bonus of up to 30% on top.

Iberia Plus Points Offer

  • Promotion is valid through 31 December 2017
  • Payment will be taken in Euros
  • You can buy a maximum 100,000 Avios per calendar year (excluding bonuses)

The promotion is tiered:

  • Buy between 2,000 and 15,000 Avios and get a 10% bonus
  • Buy between 20,000 and 45,000 Avios and get a 20% bonus
  • Buy between 50,000 and 100,000 Avios and get a 30% bonus

This is actually how the whole promotion looks….

a screenshot of a screen with numbers and a few euros

…and if you work out the math you’ll find that the price per Avios decreases the more Avios you buy.

As an example….

Buying 50,000 Avios will net you 65,000 Avios (including the bonus) at a cost of €935 or 1.44 Euro Cents per Avios

Buying 75,000 Avios will net you 97,500 Avios (including the bonus) at a cost of €1,390 or 1.43 Euro Cents per Avios

Buying 100,000 Avios will net you 130,000 Avios (including the bonus) at a cost of €1,800 or 1.38 Euro Cents per Avios

Why Iberia Plus?

  • Lower fees added to reward flights booked using Iberia Plus Avios (compared to British Airways)
  • Fewer Avios needed (compared to British Airways Executive Club) on some long haul routes
  • Different peak and off-peak seasons to British Airways Executive Club

Is This Points Sale A Good Deal?

Ok….first I’m going to convert the best cost/Avios into dollars because that makes it easier for my brain to work out how good or bad an offer this is 🙂

1.38 Euro Cents per Avios is approximately 1.63 cents (of the US variety) and that’s cheaper than the Avios that was on offer in the last British Airways sale we saw in November.

Iberia Avios bookings attract lower surcharges than British Airways Avios redemptions (one of the reasons I like Iberia Plus) so that makes them more attractive than BA’s version of the currency.

During off-peak season you can get Iberia Plus Europe – USA Business Class redemptions for 85,000 Avios + taxes….

…and at 1.63 cents/Avios that makes this promotion interesting.

At 1.63 cent/Avios this redemption would cost approximately $1,615…and that’s fantastic value.

The further you fly the less good the deal becomes as the number of Avios required for the redemption increases disproportionally to the cash price you’d have to pay for the same flights….but there are still other good deals to be had if you put in a bit of time to find them.

On short-haul routes is where Avios can really shine – especially at 1.63 cents each and especially on traditionally expensive routes.

Very short routes (600 miles each way or under) cost 11,000 Avios roundtrip and, at 1.63 cents/Avios that equates to a little under $180…and that’s a lot less than you’ll often have to pay for routes like Dallas – Austin.

Bottom Line

As usual its all about the math.

If you fly a lot of short-haul flights that are often highly priced then buying Avios at 1.63 cents can be a very good deal.

If you can find Business Class award availability across the Atlantic (preferably in off-peak season) then buying miles in this promotion can be a good deal.

Work out on which routes you’re likely to use Avios, check out how many Avios you’ll need and then check how easy it is to find award space. If things line up then it’s probably safe to buy in this promotion…otherwise move on.
