On Monday I posted about Chase emailing out promotions on some of their co-branded credit cards that offer bonus points for spending over $1,000 in a single transaction and I took a look at just how good (or bad) those offer are. It turns out that Chase has another offer out there and this time it’s for its Marriott Rewards Visa card – double points on spend at wholesale clubs.

Chase Marriott Visa Bonus Offer

The terms are as follows:

From October 1 – December 31, 2016, earn 2X points per $1 spent on up to $1,500 in purchases at wholesale clubs such as Costco®, Sam’s Club® and BJ’s® when you use your Marriott Rewards credit card.

  • No activation or enrolment needed
  • Other wholesale clubs may be ok with this offer (but no guarantees as it depends on how the transaction gets coded).

Not exactly an offer to get too may people excited but at least it’s different from the other two I’ve just discussed!

If you have a Chase Freedom card this isn’t an offer for you as you can earn 5% on up to $1,500 of wholesale club purchases for the rest of 2016…and that’s a lot better than 2 Marriott Rewards Points/dollar.

I value Marriott Rewards points at around 0.6 cents each so double points at Costoco, Sam’s Club etc… is essentially the same as a 1.2 cent rebate on every dollar spent…and that’s not great.

Putting spend on the Chase Marriott Visa card can make sense:

  • It can help towards elite status qualification  – for every $3,000 you spend on the card you’re awarded an elite qualifying night
  • The Marriott Rewards points earned from the card help towards lifetime status

But that’s not enough to make it worth using the card at wholesale clubs….at least not for me.

Based on those valuations…..

  • Starpoints – 1.8 cents
  • Citi ThankYou points – 1.6 cents
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 1.5 cents each

…I would be better off using my Amex SPG, Citi Prestige or Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card rather than my Marriott Visa.

If you’ve been offered this promotion and you have a standard 2% cashback card then you’d be better off using that too.

Bottom Line

I love that Chase is being pro-active and sending out promotions like these (I don’t want to put them off in case they come up with a good one!) but this definitely isn’t a promotion I can recommend. The Chase Marriott Visa card definitely has its uses (mostly if you’re a Marriott loyalist) but spending at warehouse clubs isn’t one of them…not even in this promotion.
