Qatar Airway has, unsurprisingly, once again published some very good Business Class fares for departures from Spain and Serbia. Business Class fares to the Middle East start at under €1,000, there’s an excellent fare available for travel to Cape Town and, at under €1,400 round-trip, one of the fares to Hong Kong looks very, very good. Some of the fares offer a great opportunity to rack up AAdvantage Miles, Avios, Elite Qualifying Miles & Tier Points.

  • Beijing – €1,785
  • Tokyo – €1,819

Some of these fares offer a chance to earn a significant amount of miles and and a chance to boost your progress towards Elite status qualification.

Taking the Hong Kong route as an example, this is what the earnings look like if you credit your flight to AAdvantage or the British Airways Executive Club (assuming no elite status):

If you already have elite status with American Airlines AAdvantage your redeemable miles earnings (RDM) will be even better:

  • Gold Status – 20,250 (40% bonus)
  • Platinum Status – 23,142 (60% bonus)
  • Executive Platinum Status – 31,821 (120% bonus)

  • Travel 13 October 2016 – 31 March 2017 (some routes available through 15 June 2017)

  • Dubai – €805
  • Cape Town – €1,424 – Excellent Fare!
  • Hong Kong – €1,375 – Excellent Fare!
  • Maldives – €1,576
  • Singapore – €1,505

The one slight negative with these fares is that the Belgrade – Doha sector is operated by the narrow-body A320 as opposed to one of Qatar Airways fantastic wide-body aircraft….but the Business Class cabin on offer is still better than what you’ll find on a lot of other airlines.

Once again there are some good opportunities to rack up miles/Avios with some of these fares.

Taking the Cape Town route as an example and assuming a passenger with no status:

If you already have elite status with American Airlines AAdvantage your redeemable miles earnings (RDM) will be even better:

Gold Status – 19,096 (40% bonus)
Platinum Status – 21,824 (60% bonus)
Executive Platinum Status – 30,008 (120% bonus)

If you have American Airlines Executive Platinum status (EXP) one round-trip to Cape Town will earn you:

  • 20% of the Elite Qualifying Miles needed to re-qualify for EXP
  • 27% of the Elite Qualifying Dollars needed to re-qualify for EXP
  • Enough redeemable miles for:
    • a round trip domestic Coach MilesSAAver award
    • a one-way domestic First Class MilesSAAver award

Bottom Line

There are some very good fares on offer here but I suspect, for most readers, just how good these fares are will depend on how cheap the positioning flights are (I guess most readers won’t be originating in Serbia or Spain).

The stand-out fare for me is the €1,539 fare between Madrid and Hong Kong. Yes, the from Belgrade is cheaper but all the flights on the Madrid route are flown in wide-body aircraft and that’s worth a small premium….at least to me.
