Yesterday I posted about a pretty fantastic Etihad Business Class sale between Europe and Asia (ending 30 July) and it looks like Qatar Airways has followed suit with its own set of great fares.
While in the Etihad sale most of the routes had good availability throughout the sale period and most of the trips were of reasonable length, the Qatar Airways sale is slightly different – availability varies quite a bit depending on the time of year you want to travel and some of the fares involve long layovers in Doha…so be on the lookout for those. But make no mistake, there are some great deals out there!
On a far more positive note, Qatar Airways flights can be credited to American Airlines AAdvantage and the British Airways Executive Club so these Business Class fares offer a great opportunity to earn miles and credit towards airline status.
To help readers gauge what earnings they can expect I’ve complied a table under each of the fares showing the following:
For flights credited to American Airlines:
- Number of Elite Qualifying Miles earned
- Number of Redeemable AAdvantage Miles earned
- Contribution to Elite Qualifying Dollars (for flights taken in 2017)
For flights credited to the British Airways Executive Club:
- Number of Tier Points earned
- Number of Avios earned
Note: The calculations have been done assuming travelers have no status. This will not affect Elite Qualifying Miles or Elite Qualifying Dollars but the number of Redeemable AAdvantage Miles shown is the minimum that will be earned – travelers with status will earn more.

Qatar Airways Business Class Fares – Things To Know
Here are a few details you should know about the fares before we go any further:
- The sale ends on 31 July 2016 – you have just over 2 days to book!
- Travel dates are 1 September 2016 – 30 June 2017
- No blackout dates specified although the good fares are more scarce in December and January
- Minimum stay requirements say 4 nights but, due to overnight flights, you can get away with 2 nights in a hotel on a lot of the fares
- Maximum stay time is 2 months
- No stopovers permitted
- Some fares require a long layover in Doha (7 – 10 hours)
- A number of the fares originate and terminate in Pisa which means that the first and last sectors of the trip will be operated by narrow-body A320 aircraft. Etihad Business Class on the A320 is considerably better than you’ll get in most other narrow-body Business Class cabins (you still get a lie-flat bed) but don’t expect it to be as fantastic as their A380 Business Class product.

Qatar Airways Business Class Fares – The Numbers
Bangkok – From $1,362 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Pisa (other origins may be available to).
Example availability – February 2017:

It’s worth noting that this fare gives the opportunity to try out the fantastic Qatar Airways A380 cabin but, at the same time, there will be segments on the Airbus A320.
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Seoul – From $1,378 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Pisa (other origins may be available to).
Example availability – March 2017:
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
This is one of the fares where, in at least one direction, there’s a very long layover in Doha. If I was doing this journey I’d probably look for a longer layover and book and airport hotel overnight.
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Tokyo Haneda – From $1,396 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Pisa (other origins may be available to).
Example availability – November 2016:
The availability in 2016 isn’t that great but then things get better in the new year – e.g. March 2017:
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
As with the Seoul fare, there’s a long-ish layover in Doha on the outbound journey and it’s overnight so it may be prudent to book a flight with an even longer layover and book an airport hotel.
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
This is the fare that’s tempting me the most right now. Here’s why:
- With two sectors on the Qatar Airways 787 Dreamliner I’ll get to try out a product I’ve yet to test
- Thanks to my Executive Platinum status I should earn: over 31,000 Redeemable AAdvantage Miles
- With one trip I’ll be almost a quarter of the way to requalifying for Executive Platinum status.
- With one trip I will earn 31% of the EQD requirement to earn Executive Platinum status.
Phuket – From $1,494 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Pisa (other origins may be available to).
Example availability – May 2017:
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
Two long layovers on this fare which will put a few people off but, if you really want to go to Phuket, for $400 more you could depart from Berlin and cut down the travel time considerably.
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Kuala Lumpur – From $1,555 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Rome (other origins may be available).
Example availability – September 2016:

And here are those flights on QatarAirways.com:
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
This is another fare that’s tempting me:
- No long layovers
- I would be trying out 3 different Qatar Airways Business Class cabins
- I’ve wanted to visit KL to see the Petronas Towers for some time
- I’d earn almost 25,000 redeemable AAdvantage miles thanks to my Executive Platinum status
- I’d earn almost 25% of the Executive Platinum EQD requirement in one trip.
Mumbai – From $1,646 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Oslo (other origins may be available).
Example availability – October 2016:
There may only be three dates where the cheapest fare is showing as available but, if you look closely, you’ll see that there are quite a few dates where the fare is only a few dollars higher.
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
No A320 flights, and two sectors with the fantastic (apparently…I’ve yet to try it) Qatar Airways Dreamliner – that’s not bad at all.
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Hong Kong – From $1,690 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Stockholm (other origins may be available).
Example availability – November 2016:
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
Watch out for the long layovers here. Departures from Stockholm give the lowest fares and you do get to fly on the 787 Dreamliner on all sectors but, if you’re prepared to spend a further $210, there are flights with considerably shorter layovers from Berlin.
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Delhi – From $1,716 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Pisa (other origins may be available).
Example availability – April 2017:
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Shanghai – From $1,733 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Berlin (other origins may be available).
Example availability – November 2016:

American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Beijing – From $1,733 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Berlin (other origins may be available).
Example availability – January 2017:

American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Singapore – From $1,734 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Berlin (other origins may be available).
Example availability – September 2016:
Example routing, aircraft & flight times (click to enlarge):
A great opportunity to try out the Qatar Airways A350 (I’ve flown on the Finnair A350 and it was fantastic!) and there aren’t any nasty layovers to put up with either.
And, just to prove that these aren’t phantom fares….here’s the fare priced up on QatarAirways.com:
American Airlines AAdvantage & British Airways Executive Club Earnings:
Ho Chi Minh City – From $1,736 Return
Cheapest fare appears to originate in Berlin (other origins may be available).
Example availability – March 2017:

Bottom Line
Try to avoid the long layovers or plan accordingly and you won’t go far wrong. Some of these fares are fantastically low (Tokyo and Seoul for under $1,400 RT!) and offer a good opportunity to visit some great cities in Asia….I’m almost certainly booking at least one of these fares in the next 24 hours.
As the time of typing I’m not having any trouble finding all of these fares on QatarAirways.com and they’re available on a number of OTAs too so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the fares posted above.
From a British Airways flyer’s point of view, it’s worth noting that a lot of these fares will earn 560 Tier points which is just 40 Tier Points shy of BAEC Silver status (oneworld sapphire status) which grants Business Class lounge access and a number of other useful benefits.
If anyone has any information (better routings, better fares, etc…) that would improve the information above then let me know in the comments and I’ll update the post if appropriate.
