What that all means is that, if you want the best fares and want the best set of trip options, you should consider starting your trip on a Saturday or Sunday:

Stopovers: These fares do not permit stopovers.

As the headline suggests, the trip starts in Dublin but you can depart Dublin as late as 1pm. That’s important for those who’d like to take advantage of these fares but don’t live in Dublin – a 1pm departure should give a lot of people enough time to get to Dublin without the expense of an overnight hotel.

How to replicate the results

As with all the good airfares I find, these have been sourced using the ITA Matrix Search. For those not familiar with this tool I suggest you take a look a the introductory posts you find on the “useful info” page.

Warning:

There is one specific function you need to use from the ITA Matrix search if you’re to get the best possible results. If you’re not careful, the search tool will return results which involve a change of airports in the UK (Heathrow to Gatwick):

This is something you should try to avoid at all costs.

To make sure you don’t accidentally get stuck with an unnecessary airport change be sure to uncheck the box labeled “allow airport changes” when setting up your ITA Matrix search:

Make the most of the trip

Las Vegas clearly isn’t for everybody – although I find that, if you embrace it for what it is, it can be good fun for a few days. Nevertheless, these fares could be a great way to kick off a very nice west coast trip – you don’t have to just go to Vegas.

Taking a look at the search results I found that you could easily get the best fare on trips that were of over 7 days in length (I only searched up to 14 days but there’s every chance longer trips are available too):

British Airways First Class to Las Vegas

What this means is that you could fly into Las Vegas, spend a couple of nights there, and then catch one or more short, cheap, internal flights to other places you’d like to visit. Just make sure you end up back in Las Vegas in time for your return flight.

There are any number of fantastic places to visit:

  • San Francisco
  • Napa
  • Sonoma
  • Monterrey/Carmel
  • Los Angeles
  • San Diego
  • Palm Springs
  • Scottsdale

And if you’d like to try a road trip then Highway 1 (San Francisco to Los Angeles) is one of the best around – do the drive from North to South to ensure that you’re driving on the ocean side all the way (so you’ll have the best views).

The British Airways offering

I confess to never having flown British Airways First Class so I can’t offer an opinion based on personal experience…but I can pass on what I’ve heard from those who have tried out the product.

Don’t expect a First Class experience along the lines of that offered by Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines or the big Middle Eastern Carriers – BA’s offering isn’t up to those. But it’s not too bad.

British Airways flies it’s 747 aircraft on the Heathrow – Las Vegas route so there’s a chance you’ll get one of their upgraded planes if you’re flying over the summer (more info on the 747 upgrades here). There’s less chance of an upgraded plane earlier in the year.

Friends flew BA First Class to Dubai recently and, while they were not overwhelmed by the service in either direction or the food on the way out, the wines were fantastic in both directions and the food on the way back was very good indeed (as it should be!).

For those happy to play around with ITA Matrix you may find that, on select dates, you can arrange to fly into Las Vegas and the fly out of San Francisco (or vice-versa). As far as I can tell Los Angeles or San Diego won’t work in the same way.

Hopefully this will be of some use to someone and, if you do end up booking one of these flights, I’d love to hear what the experience was like…especially if you get a refurbished 747.
