The latest PointBreaks list is now LIVE – full details available via this link

UPDATE 28 April 2018: IHG has provided more details of what we can expect from PointBreaks by updating the list with more properties and showing how much each property will cost…..but not all the properties on the original sneak-peak list are now being shown (more details below).

In January IHG changed how its popular PointBreaks promotion works quite dramatically. Where once all participating properties cost 5,000 points per night now we have properties where the cost of an award night ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 points.

It was a devaluation of sorts but not one that was particularly heinous.

The PointBreaks promotion had mostly gone stale before the changes were put through as it was getting harder and harder to find any properties on the list that were worth visiting.

If you happened to be someone who was already planning a visit to a location where a PointBreaks deal suddenly became available then that was a nice bonus but, for the rest of us, the promotions were increasingly pointless (no pun intended).

The January PointBreaks list was the first one released after the changes to the promotion and while the interesting properties were priced at more than the 5,000 points we’ve been used to (The Crowne Plaza Belgrade, InterContinental Cali etc..) at least there were some interesting properties to consider.

Now it’s almost time for the next PointBreaks list to be announced (for stays between 30 April and 31 July) and IHG has released a teaser list to give us a small insight into what we can expect.

This is the new sneak-peak list released by IHG on Saturday 28 April:

5,000 Points/Night

10,000 Points/Night

15,000 Points/Night

This is What We Were Told On Friday…..

Thoughts

The Hotel Indigo Dusseldorf is ranked as the 3rd best hotel in the city by TripAdvisor and even though it’s priced at 15,000 points per night that’s still a 50% discount on the regular award cost.

The Crowne Plaza in Perth is billed as the 25 the best hotel in the city (out of 65) so, considering it normally costs 40,000 points per night outside of the PointBreaks promotion, 15,000 points/night is a good deal.

It’s fantastic to see the IC Oman suddenly appear on the list (great place to visit) but I’m not sure why the IC Costa Rica has suddenly disappeared.

Joining the IC Costa Rica as properties that no longer appear on the sneak-peak list are the Hotel Indigo Austin, Holiday Inn Express London Docklands, Holiday Inn Ottawa and the Candlewood Suites San Antonio – they may well still appear on the full PointBreaks list on Monday but it’s strange that IHG has removed them from the sneak-peak list.

Anyway….

As someone who would prefer to pay 15,000 points/night for a decent hotel in a location he’d like to visit over 5,000 points for a so-so hotel in a place he’s never considered visiting I like the PointBreaks changes.

This may only be a snapshot of what we’ll be offered on Monday but it’s the first time in a while I actually have hope that the PointBreaks list may throw up something that’s genuinely useful to me.

Anything in particular you’re hoping to see on the list (realistically!) when it’s published on Monday?
