One of the major benefits of holding multiple American Express Cards is that you can take advantage of the frequent good offers the card issuer brings out to entice you to use your car(s) at select merchants.
The merchants that offer these discounts cover a broad spectrum of the market so you’ll see offers from everyday retailers (like GAP, Macy’s & Bloomingdale’s), offers from more specialist vendors (like Adobe, Dropbox, Mont Blanc & Este Lauder) and, as well as a few restaurants that appear here and there, you also get offers from various travel providers. This is where things get interesting.
In the last few days American Express has opened up two particularly good cashback offers on Hilton bookings and there are a couple of older offers still floating around (at MGM resorts and the James in New York) that will boost your Membership Rewards balance.
Get Up To 20% Back At Hilton Properties In Hawaii
The headline terms are as follows:
Get a 1X $200 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend $1,000+ on room rate and room charges, when you pay for your stay with Hilton properties in Hawaii from 2/23/18 to 7/31/18.
The detailed terms can be found when you access your offers on your Amex homepage but here are some of the more important terms you’ll need to bear in mind:
- Offer valid only at Hilton brand hotels in the state of Hawaii. (hopefully the offer tittle made that pretty obvious!)
- Reservations must be made online at hilton.com, via the Hilton Honors App or by calling 1-800-445-8667.
- Offer does not apply to advance purchase rates, including Advance Purchase, Save Now & Pay and Non-refundable rates.
- Excludes gift card purchases.
- Corporate Cards are not eligible for this offer.
- Offer only valid on room rate and room charges.
- Offer not valid for lodging stays that are paid for before the promotion start date or after the promotion end date.
- Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 7/31/2018, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase.
- Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is canceled.
There appears to be good and bad news here.
On the positive side, there isn’t anything in the terms and conditions that says the $1,000 has to be spent in a single transaction – multiple stays totaling $1,000+ should be fine
On the negative side prepaid rates don’t count (they often don’t) so reservations offering early booking discounts will not qualify for the cashback offer.
Get Up To 15% Back At Hilton Properties In Australia
The headline terms are as follows:
Get a 1X $75 USD statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend $500+ USD on room rate and room charges for your stay at Hilton properties in Australia from 2/1/18 to 6/25/18.
The detailed terms can be found when you access your offers on your Amex homepage but here are some of the more important terms you’ll need to bear in mind:
- Offer only valid for eligible US Card Members for purchases made at hotels and resorts within the Hilton Portfolio in Australia.
- Offer only valid for reservations made online at hilton.com, via the Hilton Honors App or by calling 1-800-HILTONS (445-8667).
- Excludes gift card purchases.
- Offer does not apply to advance purchase rates, including Advance Purchase, Save Now & Pay and Non-refundable rates.
- Corporate Cards are not eligible for this offer.
- Offer only valid on room rate and room charges.
- Offer not valid for stays that are paid for before or after the promotion start and end dates.
- When you make a qualifying purchase in a foreign currency, the applicable statement credit will be credited in your local currency using the exchange rate at the date the statement credit is applied.
- Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 6/25/2018, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is cancelled.
The T&Cs for this offer are, unsurprisingly, very similar to those that come with the Hawaii cashback offer – no pre-paid bookings allowed (which eliminates some of the cheapest rates) but, once again, there’s no mention that all the spend has to take place in a single transaction.
Two Other Current Amex Offers
A number of Amex offers that impact travel are expiring in the next 24 – 48 hours but there are still some that have some life left in them.
If you’re looking to boost your Membership Rewards points balance then this MGM offer may be of help:
Get 6,000 additional Membership Rewards points one-time by using your enrolled Card to spend $300+ on room rate and room charges, when you pay for your stay at select MGM Resorts destinations from 1/24/18 to 4/24/18.
“Select MGM resorts” include:
Bellagio®, ARIA®, Vdara®, MGM Grand®, The Signature at MGM Grand®, Mandalay Bay® , Delano® Las Vegas, Park MGM®, The Mirage®, Monte Carlo®, New York-New York®, Luxor®, Excalibur®, Beau Rivage®, Gold Strike® Tunica, Borgata® and MGM National Harbor®.
I value Membership rewards points at 1.5 cents each so a 6,000 point bonus is equivalent to a $90. If you just spend $300 that’s an incredible 30% rebate but, even if you spend a little more on your trip, it’s still a rebate worth having.
Another current Amex points offer is this one for the James Hotel in NYC:
Get 10,000 additional Membership Rewards points one-time by using your enrolled Card to spend $500+ on room rate and room charges, when you pay for your stay with The James New York – NoMad from 9/18/2017 to 3/15/2018.

There isn’t much time left to make the most of this offer but, with 10,000 points equating to $150 (by my valuation) this is a very good rebate if you happen to be visiting NYC in the next couple of weeks.
