Lufthansa is expected to take delivery of its first A350 aircraft this winter but, apart from a few pictures of the airline’s first A350 coming out of the paint shop (still without engines), Lufthansa hasn’t been very forthcoming with information.

A little over a month ago I put together a brief Q&A detailing what we know about Lufthansa’s new A350 and what has been strongly rumored and, at that point, one of things that was unconfirmed was the layout of the Business Class cabin.

Now we know.

The Lufthansa News Twitter account yesterday confirmed the seat count for each cabin in the A350 (we already knew this)……

….and also tweeted a seat map of the whole aircraft (click to enlarge):

As strongly suspected, Lufthansa is not introducing a new seat or a new layout for the Business Class cabin on its A350 so customers can expect to see the same seats as are now offered on some of the airline’s other aircraft (like the A330):

The Premium Economy cabin will also have the same seats as other Lufthansa PE cabins and is expected to offer seats that are 18-19″ wide with 38″ of seat pitch (leg room).

It will be interesting to see what Lufthansa does with the Economy Class cabin on this aircraft as, on all but its A380 aircraft, Lufthansa offers just 17″ 17.5″ of seat width and 31″ of seat pitch…and that’s not a lot of room.

Finnair manages to offer a perfectly acceptable 18″ of seat width in its A350 Economy Class and, as both airlines have 9 seats across the cabin, there doesn’t appear to be any reason why Lufthansa can’t do the same.

Unfortunately, as Lufthansa is showing no signs of revealing new seats for any of the cabins on the A350, I think its unlikely that we’ll see an 18″ wide seat in the Economy Class cabin. I don’t think the A380 Economy Class seats will fit in a 9-across layout on the A350 and all the other seats the airline has are 17″ wide or narrower….and those are the ones I expect Lufthansa to use.

Bottom Line

I’ve mentioned before how disappointing it is that it looks as if Lufthansa isn’t employing any imagination whatsoever when it comes to the interior of its new aircraft.

The A350 is a fantastic piece of engineering into which airlines like Qatar Airways and Finnair have managed to incorporate great Business Class cabins that will be in vogue for quite a few years to come

As far as I can tell all Lufthansa is doing is buying a brand new aircraft and filling it with interior fittings from all its older aircraft. What a shame.
