Cyber Monday is the Monday following Thanksgiving (this year it falls on 28 November) and was originally introduced as an online alternative to the mad crush that is Black Friday. Things are a bit different now and Cyber Monday has expanded way beyond its original remit to encompass dates from the third week in November through the first week in December – actual sale dates vary from vendor to vendor.

The things that haven’t really changed are the deals…they can still be pretty good.

Marriott & Starwood (now the same company) have both announced the dates for their Cyber Monday sales event and both have also offered up a sneak peek into what travelers can expect in their respective  sales. I’ll post Starwood’s preview in a separate post which will be live at the same time as this one.

Thoughts

My first thought after reading the details was “what’s up with the travel dates?”

If you’re looking to book for the Middle East and/or Africa you essentially get a 10 month travel window and if you’re looking to book stay in Europe you’ll have a 4 month travel window. But, if you want to book a stay in the US, Canada Caribbean or Latin America ,you get a travel window of just 39 days.

What good is that?!

It’s interesting to note how different the Marriott and Starwood Cyber Monday promotions seem to be (follow this link to view the Starwood preview):

  • Marriott’s booking window is just 4 days long while Starwood’s is 14 days long
  • Marriott is offering up to 25% off while Starwood is offering up to 35% off
  • Marriott has excluded Asia from the promotion while Starwood has made no mention of any excluded areas
  • Marriott has provided a very limited travel window for large parts of the globe while Starwood has announced its discounts will be valid through Labor Day 2017 with no exceptions mentioned.

It looks like we really are still dealing with two separate companies.

Some good news is that all of the Marriott brands appear to be participating (apart from Ritz-Carlton which may come out with its own sale) so at least travelers aren’t going to be too limited in their choices…but I’ll be interested to see if the full 25% off will be available at anywhere people actually want to stay and if the major Marriott properties will be participating.

25% off the JW Marriott Hong Kong would be great while 25% off at the Residence Inn Fresno isn’t going to get too many people excited.

I guess we’ll really know how good the sale is once it opens on 25 November.
