If your Marriott Rewards account is based outside of the US Marriott has a surprisingly good promotion for you at the moment. For all stays between 3 June and 31 December 2016 you’ll earn double Elite Qualifying nights meaning you’ll have very little reason not to requalify for status in 2017.

To access this promotion you’ll need to login to your Marriott Rewards account and access the promotions page where you should see the offer.

What Does “Double Elite Qualifying Nights” Mean?

To attain status with Marriott you need to stay a set amounts of nights at Marriott properties each year.

  • Silver Status – 10 nights required
  • Gold Status – 50 nights requited
  • Platinum Status – 75 nights required

With this promotion, every night that a guest stays with Marriott (between 3 June and 31 December 2016) will count as double meaning that the qualification criteria for each status level are effectively halved.

Terms & Conditions

Most of the terms & conditions are pretty straightforward but Marriott has put in one particular clause to ensure than the promotion isn’t easily gamed:

Must be a Marriott Rewards member as of April 08, 2016

So there’s no point in a US member signing up for a new Marriott Rewards account with a non-US address in the hopes of making the most of this generous promotion – it won’t work.

In case anyone was thinking that they could simply change the address on their Marriott Rewards account to get the promotion well, that wont work either:

Must have a valid physical address located outside of the United States* as the address on member’s Marriott Rewards account profile as of April 08, 2016

The other main highlights of the T&Cs are:

  • Must register for the promotion between 3 May and 30 September 2016
  • Award nights are not eligible (that shouldn’t be a surprise!)
  • Only one room per hotel stay is eligible for double Elite night credit

The full terms and conditions for the promotion are here.

Bottom Line

While this is a very generous promotion from Marriott (and considerably more interesting than their latest global promotion) it’s worth noting that the double elite qualifying nights have only succeeded in bringing Marriott’s elite status requirements down to what other hotel loyalty programs have as standard.

Here are links to the benefits you get at each Marriott Rewards status level:

If you’re already on your way to Marriott status then this could be a very nice promotion for you but, if you take into consideration the value of the benefits that Marriott offers (which aren’t all that great in my opinion), then I still wouldn’t see this promotion as a reason to go hunting for Marriott status from scratch.
