Despite the fact that I’m a Marriott Platinum guest and the fact that I rack up at least 75 nights a year with the hotel mega-chain I have never stayed at an EDITION property.
This doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the properties nor does it have anything to do with the fact that the all-caps name appears to be screaming at me from my screen – it has everything to do with the fact that there are currently just 4 Edition properties world-wide.
Marriott describes its EDITION properties as….
[A]n unexpected and refreshing collection of individualized, customized, one-of-a-kind hotels.
Showcasing the best of dining and entertainment, services and amenities, each EDITION property is completely unique, reflecting the best of the cultural and social milieu of its location and of the time.
Conceived by Ian Schrager in a partnership with Marriott International, EDITION combines the personal, intimate, individualized experience that Ian Schrager is known for, with the global reach, operational expertise and scale of Marriott.
So it’s a boutique brand…and you don’t get much more boutique-y than a brand with just 4 properties.
These are the four properties you can visit right now (click links for more info):
- The London EDITION
- The Miami Beach EDITION
- The New York EDITION
- The Sanya EDITION
An Oceanfront room at the Miami EDITION
This is all set to change in 2018 when the EDITION brand will more than double its portfolio and the good news is that the properties will be springing up all over the world – one property in particular has me excited.
No exact opening dates have been given just yet but here are the EDITION properties that are opening up in 2018 together with Marriott’s description and a suggestion of when we can expect their doors to open.

Thoughts
While I’m not going to get excited about yet another Marriott property in NYC (we already have a billion options there) or a luxury hotel in Turkey (a destination that becomes less and less appealing the more I read about the country’s leadership), a few of the other properties show promise.
EDITION properties are expensive (we can expect all of these to cost 45,000 Marriott Rewards points when they appear in the reservations system) but I suspect the more affordable properties will be the Bangkok EDITION and the Shanghai EDITION both of which I’d love to visit.
The property that has me most excited, however, is the West Hollywood EDITION on the Sunset Strip.
I’ve been watching this property since it was just a hole in the ground….
…and I’ve been checking out the renderings and following its progress pretty closely since.

West Hollywood is where I base myself whenever I get back to Los Angeles but, aside from the Andaz West Hollywood, there aren’t any properties in the area that participate in any of the major hotel loyalty programs – it’s why I often use AirBnB when I’m back in town.
Having an EDITION property in my favorite LA location may be an expensive way to use points but at least it’s another option for me to use.
Overall it’s great to see the EDITION brand grow so significantly in 2018 as it will give Marriott loyalists a nice set of new aspirational hotels at which to spend their Rewards points – they may not be luxury resorts like the IC Bora Bora or the Park Hyatt Maldives but, as city properties go, they look pretty darn good.
