Qatar Airways has launched a new Business Class sale for departures from the UK. This particular promotion is a “companion offer” which means that you’ll have to book 2 tickets to get the promotional price – great for couples but not much use to solo travelers – and there are a few fares that look quite good.

I should say right from the start that these fares are nowhere near as good as the fares I posted earlier (for departures from elsewhere in Europe) but these may be useful to travelers who would prefer not to have to fly to Europe to catch a cheaper flight.

The Business Class Fares

Are These Fares Worth It?

The Dubai fare from Edinburgh looks ok at a little under £1,320 per person and, while none of these fares are any where near as fantastic as the fares I published earlier today, they could still be worth considering if connecting in Europe isn’t for you.

As I don’t mind positioning to Europe I have a way of working out if I like the fares from the UK

When ex-UK Business Class fare sales pop up I like to work out the premium I’m being asked to pay for not having to position to Europe to catch a cheaper flight.

For example:

I’m can book a Business Class flight from Europe to Bangkok for between £960 and £1,045 right now and, after adding in the cost of flights to get me to/from the country of departure (£100 – £150), that would take my total outlay to £1,195 (max).

In this UK promotion the fate to Bangkok  £1,650 per person so, is that extra £455 (or £910 for a couple) worth it just to travel out of the UK?

For me, absolutely not…but others may feel differently.

What it all comes down to is how much you value the convenience of not having to fly to another European city to catch a cheaper fare…so the math will be different from person to person and city to city.

Remember

Qatar Airways is a member of the oneworld alliance but, as of 1 November, it would appear that Qatar Airways Business Class fares that book into Fare Code “R” no longer earn any British Airways Avios or Tier Points (these fares book into R class in most cases). At the time of writing this changes does not appear to have affected Iberia but this may well change.

At this point there is no indication on that there will be any changes to earnings in the American Airlines AAdvantage program so that may be a good alternative for those looking to make the most of these fares.
