Starwood has opened up registration for its fall “More For You” promotion which gives SPG members the chance to earn double or triple Starpoints on their stays. It’s been over a month since the last Starwood promotion ended (SPG Triple Up) and, while that promotion wasn’t bad at all, I suspect that “More For You” will work for more people.

Starwood’s “More For You” Promotion

The SPG “Triple Up” promotion that ended in July offered Starwood guests the chance to earn triple Starpoints at Sheraton properties and double Starpoints at other Starwood brands…but I think the “More For You” promotion is a little better than that.

Here’s what the “More For You” promotion is offering:

  • Double Starpoints on weekday stays of two or more nights
  • Triple Starpoints on weekend stays of two or more nights that include a Friday or Saturday night (Thursday or Friday night in the Middle East)

There’s no restriction on which properties you can earn triple Starpoints and, although triple points are now only earned on weekends, I think more people will be able to make the most of this.

Here are the highlights of the T&Cs:

  • Starwood Preferred Guest Members must register online at spg.com/moreforyou by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on 30 November 2016
  • Registered Members can earn bonus Starpoints on eligible stays between 12 September and 18 December 18, 2016
  • Members who earn double Starpoints will earn an additional 2 Starpoints per eligible dollar spent for a total of 4 Starpoints per dollar.
  • Members will earn an additional 4 Starpoints per eligible dollar spent for a total of 6 Starpoints per dollar on eligible triple-Starpoint stays.

Thoughts

Road warriors may not like this promotion quite as much as the last one as they generally have most of their stays during the week and this promotion doesn’t allow for any triple points earning outside of weekends…but for everyone else I suspect this promotion will work ok.

It’s disappointing that single nights don’t qualify for any kind of bonus and, in that way, the Hilton Double Up promotion is probably superior but there are good number of Starpoints on offer here for SPG members with status.

Here’s what the earning rates look like for this promotion:

SPG Gold & Platinum Members

  • 5 Starpoints/dollar for weeknight stays of 2 days or more
  • 7 Starpoints/dollar for weekend stays of 2 days or more

SPG 75 Night Platinum Members

  • 6 Starpoints/dollar for weeknight stays of 2 days or more
  • 8 Starpoints/dollar for weekend stays of 2 days or more

Added to those earning rates, if you use a SPG branded credit card to pay for your stays, you’ll earn a further 2 Starpoints/dollar – that could see a SPG member earning as much as 10 Starpoints/dollar.

I’m a lowly Starwood Gold member (and that’s only courtesy of my Platinum Amex card) but I could still earn 9 Starpoints/dollar if I was to pay with my Amex SPG Credit Card…and that’s not too bad.

I value Starpoints at around 1.8 cents each (it’s a conservative valuation) so, with “More For You”,  I would effectively be earning a rebate of between 12.6% and 16.2% on stays of 2 nights or more.

Be careful because not all Starwood properties are participating….although it looks as if most are.

The full list of participating properties is here and, while I’m no expert on Starwood’s portfolio, I can see that some properties that I’ve heard about aren’t on the list (like the St Regis Bora Bora, Sheraton Mallorca and the Sheraton in Tenerife) so make sure you check the list before you book.

Bottom Line

If you have status the earning rates are pretty good in this promotion and if you’re a die-hard Starwood fan then that’s obviously good news. For the more independent traveler I don’t see too much here that would suggest that changing hotel plans is a great idea – the promotion isn’t lucrative enough and you will probably do better shopping on price alone.

For travelers who tend to only stay at properties for a single night this is clearly not the right promotion either (the Hilton promotion is probably best) and, now that we’ve seen what all the major hotel chains have to offer for fall 2016, it looks as if the IHG Accelerate promotion is going to be the most lucrative promotion of them all.
