British Airways is offering UK-based Executive Club members the opportunity to save 25% on Cash and Avios bookings on select routes this winter.
I should temper any excitement a little bit at this point as long-haul routes are excluded from this offer as are flights out of Heathrow and Gatwick….but there are a few short-haul routes out of London City Airport which show some promise.
The Headline Terms & Conditions
- The promotion entitles the participant to 25% additional cash discount when part-paying for a flight using Avios on select British Airways flights operated by BA CityFlyer
- Offer available on roundtrip or one-way flights in either direction
- Bookings can be made in both Euro Traveller and Club Europe.
- Book between 23 October and 5 November 2017
- Fly between 23 October 2017 – 31 March 2018
- Promotion is only open to existing Executive Club members (and members of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme), who are resident in the United Kingdom and are aged 18 or over.

What This Means In Practice
A quick search of the various routes on which this offer is available shows that the best return you will get on your Avios is a little over 1 penny/Avios….and that’s really not a very good rate.
I’ve had a few people emailing me to ask if they should be booking flights using this promotion so I’ll tell you what I told them:
- If you have more Avios than you know what to do with then by all means burn some in this promotion – you won’t miss the Avios you’re using
- If your bank balance needs more attention than your Avios balance then use some Avios to save you some cash – yes, you may be only getting 1 penny per Avios in value but it’s still saving you cash (a currency that’s a lot more flexible than Avios).
- If you don’t fit into either category above you shouldn’t go anywhere near this promotion. It’s not very difficult to get 25% – 50% more value out of your Avios than this promotion offers and, considering BA is offering some very tempting Economy Class fares out of Heathrow right now, you would do well to keep your Avios for another occasion.
