One of the new featured built in to the new iOS update (iOS 11) is an enhancement to the Apple Maps app which allows users to search for an airport, zoom in on the map and see inside the airport’s terminals.
I’m more of a Google Maps person than an Apple Maps person so I didn’t notice this feature when it formed part of a beta release earlier this year (for San Jose and Philadelphia airports only). Now Apple has added a few more airports…
- Baltimore-Washington (BWI)
- Chicago Midway
- Chicago O’Hare
- Las Vegas
- Miami
- Minneapolis-St. Paul
- Oakland
- Portland
….but it intends to expand this list considerably and has already confirmed that the functionality will soon work in LA, New York, Dubai, Hong Kong, Geneva, London, Berlin and Amsterdam.

You don’t actually have to click on the “look inside” button…you just have to zoom in and you’ll automatically start to see inside the terminals.

Bottom Line
I really like this and it’s useful for a number of things:
- It’s useful when you don’t know an airport all that well and want to see what food options are available to you in your terminal.
- Its useful to find the exact location of the airline lounge you’re looking for – some can be surprisingly hard to find.
- It’s useful to get an idea of where your gate is in relation to where you are, where you’d like to eat, where the airline lounges are or where you’re meeting someone.
- And for bloggers it’s very useful to show the location of a lounge we’re reviewing 🙂
I hope Apple hurries up and releases more of these maps…and the sooner they start adding international locations the better – I still find a few overseas airports a nightmare to navigate.
