Starwood has followed in Marriott’s footsteps and released its promotion for the second quarter of 2018….and it’s just as bad as Marriott’s.

Starwood’s 1Q promotion offered double Starpoints after the first stay as well as a bonus 500 Starpoints when a stay included a Friday or Saturday night which, while hardly inspiring, was better than the dross Starwood has unveiled for 2Q 2018.

Thoughts

Wow….just wow.

I thought the Marriott 2Q promotion was pathetic but this one has somehow conspired to be even worse!

As truly dire as the Marriott 2Q promotion is at least all the major Marriott brands are participating while here we have to peruse a list of “participating properties” just to make sure we get a pathetic 250 Starpoints per night (after having already spend 2 rewardless nights).

I said it in 1Q and I’ll say it again….

I’ve long held the view that hotels should either have to fully embrace a loyalty/rewards program or not participate at all – cherry-picking which parts of a program to follow and which promotions to participate in shouldn’t be allowed.

Starwood/SPG is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to allowing properties to opt out and it’s something I hope Marriott eliminates when Marriott Rewards and SPG are finally merged.

Bottom Line

This is a staggeringly poor promotion from Starwood and, annoyingly, the earnings mirror Marriott’s exactly (250 Starpoints convert to 750 Marriott rewards points) so there’s no way of making one promotion better than the other.

Still, having said just how terrible a promotion this is, I would still encourage everyone to register for the Starwood 2Q promotion as it costs nothing and you never know when plans change and you find yourself at a SPG property – it would be a shame to miss out on bonus points just because you couldn’t be bothered to register.
