Now that Marriott owns Starwood the two are coordinating their promotions a lot more closely (to the extent that both released their fall promotions at the same time) so, after having seen the disappointing Marriott MegaBonus promotion, I was a little concerned at what Starwood would offer.

SPG Explore More

Starwood’s 2017 fall promotion had been called “SPG Explore More” and here are the important terms and conditions you’ll need to know:

  • Registration runs through 30 November 2017
  • The promotion runs from 12 September 2017 through 15 January 2018

Travelers registering for the promotion and staying at Starwood properties during the promotion period will earn:

  • 1,000 bonus Starpoints® per stay at St. Regis®, The Luxury Collection®, W®, Le Méridien®, Westin®, Sheraton®, Tribute Portfolio™ and Design Hotels™
  • 500 bonus Starpoints per stay at Aloft®, ElementSM and Four Points®
  • 10,000 bonus Starpoints when you stay 25 or more nights

The full terms and conditions can be accessed via this link but the important thing to note is that there doesn’t appear to be any limit to the number of times you can earn the individual stay bonuses.

The 10,000 bonus Starpoints is a one-time thing so road-warriors staying 50 nights shouldn’t expect a second 10,000 point bonus….but it looks as if each stay will earn at least 500 bonus Starpoints.

That’s great!

Compare this to the Marriott MegaBonus promotion where the most anyone can earn is a single free night certificate for a stay at a Category 1-5 property and we have to hope that it’s the Starwood promotions team that hangs around once Starwood is fully integrated into Marriott.

Bottom Line

I value Starpoints at a reasonably conservative 1.8 cents each….so each stay at a full-service Starwood property would essentially earn me an $18 rebate. That’s not great stays of multiple nights but if I’m just staying a single night that’s not bad at all.

While the Marriott MegaBonus promotion is a bit of a damp squib (it doesn’t really incentivize anyone to move stays over from another hotel chain) this promotion shows promise.

Starpoints can be used very effectively for premium cabin airfare rewards (as I showed earlier in the week) but they’re ordinarily quite hard to earn – that makes any opportunity to earn easy Starpoints one that should be seriously considered. This is one such opportunity.
