Qantas Explorer is a way of saving on airfare if you plan to visit Australia and, while you’re there, take a number of domestic flights on Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar. In addition, because there’s no penalty for date changes to the Qantas Explorer part of an itinerary, this can be a flexible way to book domestic Australian flights if your plans are fluid.

Full details of the Qantas Explorer can be found on this Qantas page, but here are some details in brief:

  • Up to 25% discount available for select Australian domestic routes when purchased with a Qantas round trip international flight from the US to Australia.
  • Sale period runs through 26 March 2018.
  • The Qantas Explorer must be purchased simultaneously with a trans-Pacific Qantas or American Airlines fare from the US to Australia round trip or one way from the US to Australia. T
  • ravel is in Economy on Qantas or on Qantas codeshare flights operated by Qantas Link, Jetstar, Alliance Airlines or Air North.
  • No charge for date change
  • Routing change is US$40 per transaction per person.
  • An additional service fee of US$40/AU$80/NZ$80 per person applies for each change made via telephone, retail outlet, or an airport ticket counter, depending on the country where the change is made.
  • Cancellation charges are based on the Qantas international ticket conditions, except that tickets purchased one week or more before departure may be cancelled without charge within 24 hours of ticketing.
  • Child discounts do not apply.
  • Discounts for infants (under 2 years) not occupying a seat are permitted at 10% of the applicable adult fare.
  • No minimum stay
  • Maximum stay 330–350 days from the date of reservation.

Locking In The Savings

Here’s what Qantas has to say about getting the promotional discount:

Know what you want to do and where you’d like to go? Then book all your flights at the same time by choosing the multi-city option when making your Qantas international flight booking.

Or, once you’ve booked your international flights with us to Australia, follow these simple steps to book your domestic flights to take advantage of these great fares:

    1. Sign in to your international booking from the Manage Booking page with your booking reference or sign in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer bookings.
    2. If your booking is eligible, you’ll see a promotional image giving you the option to book your domestic Australian flights.
The Qantas Explorer fares open to US travelers are distance-based and are offered in three zones:
  • Zone A: 0 – 750 miles
  • Zone B: 751 – 1,450 miles
  • Zone C: 1,451+ miles

Annoyingly, nowhere on the Qantas Explorer webpage does it indicate how much you can expect to pay per sector in each of those zones, but, base on what else I can find online, this is definitely a cheaper alternative to booking flights separately.

Don’t forget that the discounts are only available for bookings made through 26 March 2018 so, if you’re thinking of booking a trip to Australia (and flying around within Australia), don’t wait too long.
